Endometriosis and Laser Hair Removal: Everything You Need to Know
At The Laser Base, we meet so many clients who are not only on a journey to smooth, hair-free skin but are also navigating life with endometriosis. This chronic condition affects an estimated 1 in 10 women and those assigned female at birth — that's around 176 million people worldwide — yet it remains widely misunderstood.
In this blog, we’re shedding light on what endometriosis is, how it affects the body (including hair growth), and what that means for laser hair removal.
💛 What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) grows outside of the uterus. This tissue can attach itself to areas like the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and even the intestines or bladder.
Each month, just like the endometrium, this tissue thickens, breaks down, and bleeds — but with no way to leave the body, it causes inflammation, pain, and the formation of scar tissue (adhesions).
💛 What Are the Symptoms of Endometriosis?
Symptoms can vary from person to person, but the most common ones include:
Chronic pelvic pain (often worse during periods)
Pain during or after sex
Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)
Heavy bleeding or irregular periods
Bloating (sometimes referred to as “endo belly”)
Pain with bowel movements or urination
Fatigue
Difficulty getting pregnant
It’s important to remember that pain levels don’t always reflect the severity of the condition — some people with mild endometriosis have intense pain, while others with severe cases experience minimal symptoms.
💛 How Does Endometriosis Affect Hair Growth?
Endometriosis often goes hand-in-hand with hormonal imbalances. Many people with endo also have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or other hormone-related conditions, which can impact hair growth in a few ways:
Excess hair growth (hirsutism): Caused by higher levels of androgens (male hormones) — hair may grow thicker and darker on the face, stomach, back, or thighs.
Hair loss (thinning or shedding): Hormonal disruptions can also trigger hair loss on the scalp.
These changes can be frustrating — especially when it feels like your hair growth is out of your control — but that’s where laser hair removal can offer some relief.
💛 Laser Hair Removal and Endometriosis: What to Expect
At The Laser Base, we personalise laser hair removal treatments for clients with hormonal conditions like endometriosis. Here’s what you need to know about how endo might affect your laser journey:
Hormonal hair can be more stubborn: Hair influenced by hormones tends to be thicker and darker, so it may take more sessions to achieve smooth results.
Consistency is key: Laser works by targeting hair in its active growth phase. If your hormones are fluctuating, it’s crucial to stick to your treatment schedule.
Maintenance may be needed: While laser reduces hair growth long-term, hormonal imbalances can trigger new growth over time. Maintenance sessions help keep this in check.
The good news? Laser hair removal can drastically reduce hair growth, helping you feel more confident and in control — even if your hormones have other plans.
💛 How to Get Diagnosed with Endometriosis
If you suspect you have endometriosis, it’s important to seek medical advice. Here’s how to start the process:
Track your symptoms: Keep a diary of your pain, period patterns, and any other changes — this can help doctors understand your experience.
Speak to your GP: Be clear about your symptoms and ask for a referral to a gynaecologist.
Further tests: Diagnosis may involve an ultrasound, MRI, or laparoscopy (a minor surgery where a small camera is inserted to check for endometriosis tissue).
Key things to remember:
Diagnosis can take time — on average, it takes 7-8 years for someone to be diagnosed.
Painful periods are not normal. If you’re in pain, push for answers.
You are not alone — many people are fighting this battle and deserve to be heard.
